Chitimacha District - District 3

• The Chitimacha District, serving the youth of St. Mary Parish and Lower St. Martin Parish since 1914.

Message from the Executive!

Chitimacha District November Newsletter

I want to Thank all of you for the great effort on the Popcorn Sales! Our numbers will be in soon, and I will post them on the website. In the mean time, please send me your TOP Seller from your unit so that we can recognize him on our website! A photo with him and a parent or leader would be great too.

We have one more training opportunity for you new Cub scouters out there! November 8th in Eunice (see training page). We will be offering Committee, Cubmaster, Webelos Den Leader, Wolf/Bear Cub Den Leader and Tiger Den Leader training. These trainings will help you to better understand and prepare for your scouting year, and help your scouts to better enjoy the program. We also have a BALOO Training on the same day at the Optimist Club in Lafayette. Hope to hear that some of you are taking advantage of these opportunities.

Cub Adventure is over, and from what you have told me, went GREAT! I know I had a lot of fun running the first weekend.

Winter Camp is just around the corner! Deadline for Merit badge requests is Nov. 4th, so get them IN!

Order of the Arrow Ordeal is Nov. 14-16 at Mt. Bayou. If your troop has held elections, get your guys up to camp to experience the OA!

I hope everyone has a safe and fun-filled Thanksgiving Holiday!

Craig Overland
Chitimacha District Executive

Scouting in the News!

Eagle Project

7/22/08
The Spirit of Morgan City shrimp boat monument on Brashear Avenue in Morgan City is being spruced up by Eagle Scout candidate Eric Verret and friends. The Eagle project kept Verret and his support staff busy all weekend. By Sunday afternoon, when this photograph was snapped, a great majority of the painting had been completed. Verret, second from left, said he was getting help from his parents, Jude and Kat Verret, and Kayla Leonard, Alex Moye, Braden Manuel, Ray Lahoste, Frankie Marcrum, Bobby Cline, Ethan Cline and Daniel Verret. The monument stands as a reminder to the past dominance of the shrimping industry in Morgan City, once known as the Jumbo Shrimp Capital of the World. (Photo courtesy The Daily Review)

Parish Distinguished Citizens Award Dinner

6/1/08
Evangeline Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, honored John T. Johnson of Franklin on Thursday as their St. Mary Parish Distinguished Citizen. Johnson, right, was presented with both the award and a copy of the first edition of the Boy Scout handbook by Jim Rees, CEO of Evangeline Area BSA. During ceremonies at the Patterson Area Civic Center, Johnson was recognized not only as one of the founding fathers of Oceaneering International, which now has a base of operations in Morgan City, but for his service to church, community and family. Among other things, Johnson has served as a Morgan City council member, United Way of South Louisiana president, Petroleum Club of Morgan City president and member of the Associated Diving Contractors Hall of Fame. MORGAN CITY ROTARY CLUB members learned that the recipient of the "Silver Beaver Award" which is presented for distinguished service to the scouting program within the local Boy Scouts of America council was awarded to fellow Rotarian Mike Vanover at a recent luncheon at the Petroleum club. Pictured from left are executive board member Frank S. Guarisco, Vanover and Chitimacha District Executive Craig Overland.
